Sumatran mosque architecture

This finely worked model represents a Sumatran mosque with three ascending pyramidal roofs, broad projecting eaves and a tall pointed finial. The façades are richly pierced with geometric and floral motifs, while the lower register combines repeated arches and narrow uprights.

Separate walled courtyard

The mosque is accompanied by a separate enclosed courtyard with an arched gateway and openwork railings. The individual cast sections were assembled into a complex architectural miniature, preserving the craftsmanship of early Indonesian brasswork.

Patina and casting

The brass has developed a warm brown-gold patina with darker oxidation in the recesses and natural wear along exposed edges. Undersides and inner surfaces retain old casting and finishing marks consistent with early-20th-century manufacture.

Presentation

The complete ensemble is mounted on a black wooden display base with four small feet. Its unusual subject, scale and intricate pierced decoration make it a strong collector's piece within Indonesian and Islamic art.
