Origin: China, possibly southern China / border region with Burma
Period: late Qing dynasty to early Republic
Date: ca. 1850–1920
Material: heavy natural stone, likely limestone / marble-like stone
Subject: Guanyin / Avalokiteshvara, standing bodhisattva
Dimensions: H 92 × W 25 cm
Estimated weight: ca. 80–120 kg
SKU: 818
This heavy sculpture represents Guanyin, the Chinese form of Avalokiteshvara. The figure is shown frontally with a slight sway through the hips, a calm expression, high coiffure, chest ornament and long falling robe panels. Its compact monumentality is consistent with Buddhist temple and architectural stone sculpture.
The head, hairstyle, jewellery and treatment of the robe strongly support a Chinese Buddhist context. At the same time, the massive lower section and pale stone recall examples from Burma and the southern borderlands. We therefore describe the work as Chinese, with a possible connection to a southern Chinese or Sino-Burmese workshop tradition.
Close-up photographs show a compact granular stone structure with old discoloration, weathering and light greenish deposits in recessed areas. The surface is softly worn, and fine lines in the hair, robe and ornament have been weakened by age and use.
Both arms are missing from the upper arms. The exposed breaks show old, weathered stone structure. Additional wear includes small chips, scratches, discoloration and local losses. The sculpture is mounted on a modern black display base, which is not original to the figure.
Height: 92 cm
