Dimensions: H 25 × W 25 cm
Weight: 3.6 kg
Material: Cast iron
Origin: Japan
Product Type: Japanese lantern / Tōrō
A substantial Japanese lantern based on the traditional Tōrō form, cast in iron and assembled from several components. The square light chamber has pierced panels and a hinged access door, with a holder inside for a candle or other light source.
The broad pagoda-like roof rises sharply at the corners and terminates in a stepped finial. A metal carrying bow and chain form part of the construction, allowing the lantern to be displayed either standing or suspended.
The iron retains a dark brown to rust-brown surface with visible oxidation, weathering and traces of use. These surface changes have been left intact and contribute to the character of the object. The door, suspension bow and principal structural elements remain present.
Each object is examined before it is offered: material, casting or carving technique, surface, and signs of age are compared with documented references. You will receive a certificate of authenticity and an official invoice detailing the period, material, and available provenance.
Fully insured worldwide shipping in museum-quality packaging. Returns are sent to our Dutch address and you have a 14-day cooling-off period.
