Large Polychrome Balinese Woodcarving – Mythological Rishi (Sage)
This impressive, hand-carved statue, 54 cm tall, is a magnificent example of Balinese craftsmanship from the mid-20th century (ca. 1950). It depicts a Rishi, a mythological sage or spiritual teacher, who radiates a powerful and protective presence.
Refined Craftsmanship & Symbolism
The statue is crafted from solid tropical hardwood and decorated with rich polychrome painting in traditional earth tones, accented with gold leaf. Particularly striking is the extremely detailed carving: from the finely rendered beard and expressive facial features to the floral motifs on the back of the clothing and the characteristic diamond pattern on the sarong.
Condition & Authenticity
This object dates from the period when Balinese art enjoyed great international appreciation due to the unprecedented quality of the carving. The statue is in excellent vintage condition with an authentic patina that enhances its historical character. A unique collector's item for lovers of high-quality Indonesian art.
