Ganesha caught mid-dance: this Nritya Ganapati was cast in brass, also called yellow bronze, in South India around 1950–1960. Balanced on one foot, the elephant-headed god rises from a lotus podium set on a stepped square base, with his faithful rat Mushika waiting at his feet.

Four arms frame the figure. Among his attributes is an axe or goad, while the trunk curls towards the modak, the sweet that Ganesha is never without. A small halo sits behind his head. The casting is crisp, with finely worked ornament on the crown and jewellery. This is decorative temple work of the 20th century, made in South India's long tradition of cast devotional images.

Condition

Good condition. An even golden patina, lightly polished. The hollow-cast base shows green oxidation inside and an ink inscription that reads something like 'C/B30'; see the photo of the underside.
