Royal Bamoun imagery
This substantial cast bronze mask belongs to the courtly artistic tradition of the Bamoun, also known as Bamum, in the Cameroon Grassfields. Its commanding face combines prominent rounded eyes and an open mouth with an elaborate headdress. Two opposed stylised reptiles crown the composition, a powerful visual vocabulary associated with rank, protection and royal authority in Grassfields prestige art.
Casting and surface
The mask was produced in copper alloy using the lost-wax process. The reverse retains the irregular structure of individual casting and incorporates a suspension loop for wall display. A deep brown to black surface is enriched by local green copper oxidation and natural traces of age.
Condition
Good historical condition with surface wear, patination and local oxidation consistent with age and material. A large and visually forceful example designed for strong architectural display.
