Research Report: Russian Orthodox Icon – Mother of God Hodegetria
This authentic Russian icon, dating from the late 18th to early 19th century, displays the classical iconography of the Mother of God Hodegetria ("She who shows the way"). Measuring 29.5 x 24 cm, it is a substantial panel of high quality.
Technical Analysis & Expertise
- Iconography: At the center is the Blessed Virgin Mary with the Christ Child in her arms. The refined assist (gold shading) on the robes is applied with extreme detail, indicating a skilled master from a Russian center of painting.
- Material: The heavy wooden panel shows clear traces of manual workmanship and natural oxidation on the reverse side. A fine Levkas (chalk undercoat) is present beneath the egg tempera pigments. Surface: Macro photographs confirm the presence of an authentic crackle network and the dark oxidation of the original Olifa (varnish layer), which is crucial for the dating.
