Nepalese wooden shaman mask from the Middle Hills
Origin: Nepal, Middle Hills / Himalayas
Date: ca. 1900–1930
Material: hand-carved wood
Dimensions: H 29 × W 19 cm
Weight: 300 g
Restrained archaic design
The elongated face is carved with almond-shaped eye openings, a narrow projecting nose and a simple pierced mouth. Three parallel incised lines across the forehead provide the principal graphic detail within an otherwise deliberately spare composition.
Construction and wear
The mask is relatively shallow and only gently curved. Old holes along the side edges relate to a former suspension or wearing system. The reverse preserves clear chopping and chisel marks, while the apertures and perimeter have been softened by repeated handling.
Surface and condition
The wood carries a dark brown-black patina with earthy discoloration, small age cracks and areas of abrasion. It remains unrestored and retains the austere surface associated with Himalayan ethnographic masks.
Each object is examined before it is offered: material, casting or carving technique, surface, and signs of age are compared with documented references. You will receive a certificate of authenticity and an official invoice detailing the period, material, and available provenance.
Fully insured worldwide shipping in museum-quality packaging. Returns are sent to our Dutch address and you have a 14-day cooling-off period.
