Burma (Myanmar), c. 1900–1940. Carved in the round from solid teak and painted in blue, silver, red and gold tones, with the original polychromy. Height 132 cm, width 38.5 cm, weight 25.8 kg.
A standing protective figure wearing a tall, tapering multi-tiered crown with a red finial. The right hand is raised in abhaya mudra, the gesture of protection and reassurance, while the left grips a long staff. The blue bodice carries a repeating silver leaf design; flame-like sashes, hip ornaments and long pendant front panels frame the lower body. Carved floral bosses and diamond-pattern bands continue around the fully decorated back.
He came from the same source as a Burmese teak court attendant of almost equal height, and the two make a striking pair.
Age-related cracks to the timber, wear to the painted surface and old insect damage. A substantial split in the round wooden base was stabilised in the past with metal strips. The photographs record these details. No glass or mirror inlay.
