A ceremonial hsun-ok from Myanmar
This richly decorated hsun-ok belongs to the Burmese Buddhist tradition of presenting food and other offerings to monasteries and temples. Its tall removable cover and separate raised stand give the object the distinctive vertical profile associated with ceremonial offering vessels from Myanmar.
Construction and decoration
The vessel is formed in turned and carved wood with deep red-brown lacquer. Broad metal bands around the shoulder and cover are worked with scrolling and scalloped ornament and set with small blue, green and mirrored elements. The separate stand is substantial in construction, with relief decoration, floral motifs and further inset details.
Surface and age
The surviving surface shows scratches, lacquer wear, darkened deposits, small losses and old contact wear to the undersides. The metalwork and inlay also show consistent ageing and handling. These marks support its long practical and ceremonial use rather than a purely decorative history.
