Compact architectural form

Made from remarkably heavy cast iron, this Japanese lantern is built like a small piece of architecture. A broad pagoda roof crowns the pierced light chamber, while the substantial lower section gives the 24 cm object considerable visual weight.

Opening chamber for a light source

One panel is hinged and opens to reveal the interior support intended for a small candle or light. Pierced openings around the chamber allow illumination to escape. A metal loop at the top also makes suspended display possible.

Naturally weathered surface

The iron carries an irregular reddish-brown oxidation patina with darker areas and visible traces of age and exposure. Rather than concealing the material, this surface emphasizes its tactile character and gives the lantern a strong presence as Japanese decorative art for an interior, veranda or sheltered garden setting.
