His right hand reaches down to touch the earth in Bhumisparsha mudra, the moment the Buddha called the earth to witness his enlightenment.

Inlaid eyes give the face a quiet presence, framed by finely curled hair and long ears, with a small red element at the centre of the headband. The headband and robe borders are worked in raised lacquer relief, known in Burma as thayo, and painted with dots and scrolls. Much of the gilding has worn away over time, letting the red lacquer glow through and lending the statue a warm, lived-in character.

Condition

Genuinely old, with wear, small scratches and minor losses consistent with age. The underside is hollowed out and shows a dry, old wood patina.

Specifications

Origin: Burma (Myanmar), Mandalay style

Date: c. 1920–1950

Material: wood with red lacquer, gold leaf and raised lacquer relief (thayo)

Mudra: Bhumisparsha (earth-touching)

Height × width: 50.5 × 40 cm

Statue weight: 4.8 kg

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1012/6170/5547/files/birmaanse-houten-boeddha-rode-lak-bladgoud-vooraanzicht.jpg?v=1793715730
