Restrained archaic form

The slender mask is distinguished by a notably high forehead, narrow almond-shaped eye openings, a strong projecting nose and a small open mouth. Its spare modelling gives the face a concentrated and archaic presence.

Construction and evidence of wear

The reverse is deeply hollowed by hand. Old side holes retain remnants of the former carrying or suspension cords. The interior preserves clear chopping and chisel marks together with a dark handling patina.

Patina and condition

The wood carries a deep dark-brown to black-brown patina with softened wear around the eyes, nose, mouth and perimeter. Local shrinkage cracks and small historic losses are consistent with age and use. The mask remains unrestored.
