Nepalese wooden shaman mask from the Middle Hills
Origin: Nepal, Middle Hills / Himalayas
Date: ca. 1900–1930
Material: hand-carved wood
Dimensions: H 22.5 × W 14.5 cm
Weight: 200 g
Archaic facial structure
The mask is defined by a projecting nose, narrow pierced eyes and a simple open mouth. Its spare carving gives the face a strong, almost abstract presence associated with Himalayan folk and shamanic mask traditions.
Carving and use
The reverse is deeply hollowed with pronounced adze and chisel marks. Old holes at both sides relate to an earlier suspension or wearing system. The irregular rim has been softened by extended use.
Surface and condition
A layered dark brown to black patina covers the wood, interrupted by earthy pigment traces, old shrinkage cracks and worn areas around the apertures and edges. The mask remains unrestored and retains its raw historic surface.
Each object is examined before it is offered: material, casting or carving technique, surface, and signs of age are compared with documented references. You will receive a certificate of authenticity and an official invoice detailing the period, material, and available provenance.
