Antique Japanese Nichiren Daishonin from the Meiji period

Origin: Japan

Material: carved wood, black lacquer, gilded wooden altar base, aged textile and brocade
Dimensions: H 24.3 × W 18.7 × D 11.6 cm

Subject: Nichiren Daishonin (1222–1282), seated Buddhist monk

A devotional portrait of Nichiren

The sculpture presents Nichiren Daishonin seated in monastic dress with a shaven head and restrained expression. The compact figure is elevated on a multi-tiered altar base, preserving the format of a domestic or temple devotional image.

Surviving kesa and brocade

The most distinctive element is the survival of the old textile dressing. Layered beige, grey and red fabrics remain wrapped around the figure and cushions. Their extensive fraying, holes and losses are integral to the object's age and devotional history rather than later decorative additions.

Gilded altar base

The stepped wooden base carries a worn gold-toned surface with carved floral ornament to the front. Abrasion, darkened areas, small losses and handling marks remain visible throughout.

Condition

The carved wooden figure remains structurally sound. Lacquer and gilding show age-related wear and local losses. The textiles are fragile and heavily worn, with tears, holes, frayed edges and missing sections.

Each object is examined before it is offered: material, casting or carving technique, surface, and signs of age are compared with documented references. You will receive a certificate of authenticity and an official invoice detailing the period, material, and available provenance.
